Mother Nature is undoubtedly an artist
Carbon is one of the most common elements in the universe and is present in all known life and can take several forms, the most notable? A diamond. An internally flawless, colourless, rough stone is truly spectacular and a sight to behold. Yet, it is simply compressed carbon. Atoms so tightly packed together under intense heat and pressure that they form the hardest material known and something truly breathtaking to behold.
Another form of carbon is coal.
coal.photography was born out of a desire to take the every day and make it astonishing; to take something already remarkable and make it extraordinary. "Every photo for me is a opportunity to share something unique and remarkable about the people or the place I am at," says Alexander Legaree, "and bring out the best in whatever I am photographing".
Photography has always been an integral part of Alexander's life. Whether it's capturing the unique landscapes of Canada's North or on the set of a film, he continues to see the beauty in all around him and capture the best in people.
He has traveled extensively and continues to explore both internal and external landscapes with his photography and in June 2011, launched coal.photography with the help of the Nortwest Territories Society for the Protection of Animals (NWT SPCA).In mid-June, coal.photography launched with resounding success. Alexander would donate $2.50 for every "Like" on his Facebook page to the NWT SPCA), and within 24 hours, 251 people showed their support. By the end of the campaign, Alexander personally donated nearly $1,000 towards the construction of the much needed animal shelter for Yellowknife.
coal.photography is currently planning an exciting fundraiser in support of BETTY House, a transitional shelter for women and women with children in Yellowknife. The fundraiser will start in the fall.

Alexander Legaree
Somewhere between Alaska and Greenland, where winters are easily -40 Celsius (without the wind) and the sun hardly sets in the summer, you'll find photographer Alexander Legaree.
While dogsledding and igloo building aren't a regular part of his life, the North is Alexander's home and the source of his inspiration.
He has photographed as far North as Grise Fiord, Canada, to the southernmost city in the world, Ushuia, Argentina and from rough EKATI diamonds to the Blue Mosque, Alexander has travelled extensively and shares his world through his lens.
His unique perspective and creativity have afforded him opportunities to shoot stills for a film, Indy bands and government reports. His innate ability to learn and adapt has allowed him to shoot alongside some of the best photographers in the North and his willingness to grow and to learn has seen his skills grow and develop quickly.
Through mentorship from remarkable photographers Dave Brosha and Pat Kane, Alexander continues to grow and develop his skills and will continue to take his photography to the next level.
